Handbags live-drawing - Dior Lady Art Event

My first trip in 2020 took me to Munich for a very special handbag presentation at Dior. Once there, I was initially overwhelmed by the bright reception in the entrance of the boutique: over three floors, the finest models of clothes were displayed in pure white. Next to them were the colourful handbags, which were considered the real object of desire that evening.
This was a very special model: the “Lady Dior”, who could actually be called "Lady DI-or". In advance I had already researched what this famous accessory was all about: According to the story, the bag made its first appearance in September 1995 on the arm of the famous British princess and fashion icon who received the splendid Plongé lamb leather with cannage stitching from the French president's wife Bernadette Chirac at the Grand Palais. In her search for the perfect gift, Madame Chirac had found it in a Dior studio and managed to have the Dior House produce the prototype within 24 hours as an exclusive edition for Lady Diana. The popular princess, in turn, ordered a model of every available version and took the bag with her on her travels, which is why she eventually became the eponym for the "Lady Dior".
And while the Lady Dior as a cult bag embodies all the codes of the Dior leather goods, the models that the guests and I saw were exciting new interpretations. On the occasion of the fourth edition of "Dior Lady Art", artists from all over the world such as Joana Vasconcelos, Rina Banerjee, Wang Guangle, among others, created their interpretation of the Lady Dior for the limited edition. The approximately 50 invited guests in the Munich boutique were delighted about the exclusive opportunity to pose with the much sought-after bag and to be in the limelight themselves for a short time while drawing live. In the end, the enthusiasm and the desire for a fashion illustration was so great that the estimated time frame had to be extended in order to do justice to all guests and to prevent one or the other dispute about one of the coveted drawings...

Meine erste Reise im Jahr 2020 führte mich nach München zu einer ganz besonderen Handtaschenpräsentation im Hause Dior. Dort war ich zunächst überwältigt vom leuchtenden Empfang im Eingang der Boutique: Über drei Stockwerke hinweg waren feinste Kleidermodelle in purem weiß ausgestellt. Daneben warteten die bunten Handtaschen, die an diesem Abend als das eigentliche Objekt der Begierde galten. Dabei handelte es sich um ein ganz besonderes Modell: Die „Lady Dior“, die eigentlich auch als „Lady DI-or“ bezeichnet werden könnte.
Im Voraus hatte ich bereits recherchiert, was es mit diesem berühmten Accessoire auf sich hat: Der Geschichte nach hatte die Tasche ihren ersten Auftritt nämlich im September 1995 am Arm jener berühmten britischen Prinzessin und Mode-Ikone, die das Prachtexemplar aus Plongé-Lammleder mit Cannage-Absteppung von der französischen Präsidentengattin Bernadette Chirac im Grand Palais überreicht bekam. Auf der Suche nach dem perfekten Geschenk war Madame Chirac in einem Dior-Atelier fündig geworden und schaffte es, dass das Haus Dior den damaligen Prototypen innerhalb von 24 Stunden als exklusive Edition für Lady Diana anfertigte. Die beliebte Prinzessin wiederum bestellte ein Modell jeder erhältlichen Version und nahm die Tasche mit auf Reisen, weswegen sie am Ende zur Namensgeberin für die „Lady Dior“ wurde.
Und während die Lady Dior als Kulttasche alle Codes der Dior Lederwaren verkörpert, waren die Modelle, die die Gäste und ich zu Gesicht bekamen, aufregende Neuinterpretationen. Anlässlich der vierten Auflage der „Dior Lady Art“ kreiierten Künstler aus aller Welt wie u.a. Joana Vasconcelos, Rina Banerjee, Wang Guangle für die limitierte Auflage ihre Interpretation der Lady Dior. Die rund 50 geladenen Gäste in der Münchner Boutique freuten sich über die exklusive Möglichkeit, mit der heiß begehrten Tasche zu posieren und dabei beim Live-Zeichnen für kurze Zeit selbst im Rampenlicht zu stehen. Am Ende war die Begeisterung und der Wunsch nach einer Modeillustration sogar so groß, dass der veranschlagte Zeitrahmen verlängert werden musste, um allen Gästen gerecht zu werden und den ein oder anderen Streit um eine der begehrten Zeichnungen zu verhindern…
